IGSSE Forum 2026 - Writing in Academia and Beyond
For three days, the IGSSE Forum once again brought doctoral researchers together in Raitenhaslach - creating a space filled with lively discussions, new ideas, and meaningful connections. Under this year’s theme, “Writing in Academia and Beyond”, participants explored the many dimensions of scientific writing and reflected on their own voice as researchers.
Tackling Writing Challenges
The program combined inspiration with hands-on learning. The opening keynote, given by psychologist Dr. Martin Greisel, addressed a challenge familiar to many: procrastination, offering insights and practical strategies on how to navigate and overcome it in the writing process. This was followed by a series of interactive workshops, including Finding Your Own Voice, From Idea to an Outstanding Thesis, Proposal Writing, Procrastination, and Doctorate as a Maestro: Orchestrating the Writing Process, all designed to support participants in their day-to-day research and writing.
Sharing Experiences and Perspectives
In the IGSSE Connect Sessions, participants gathered in small groups, openly sharing their projects, exchanging perspectives, and discussing both challenges and successes along the doctoral journey. Beyond the academic program, there was also room for creativity and collaboration. During an afternoon photo challenge organized by the doctoral representatives, participants worked together in a relaxed atmosphere, capturing ideas and moments in imaginative ways.
The forum concluded academically with the keynote “Meeting the Editor,” where Dr.-Ing. Benjamin Büttner (TUM Chair of Urban Structure and Transport Planning) in his role of editor in chief of the open access Elsevier journal Journal of Urban Mobility provided valuable insights into the submission and publication process, offering participants a behind-the-scenes perspective on academic publishing.
Strengthening the Community
A festive gala dinner on the second evening marked a special moment of the forum. During the evening, alumni Sarah Dummert, Laura Hainke, and Francesca Ziliotto were awarded their IGSSE certificates by the IGSSE Director, Prof. Barbara Wohlmuth. The program also included a collaborative “puzzle hunt”, inviting participants to solve challenges together and enjoy the spirit of teamwork in an informal setting.
Once again, the IGSSE Forum highlighted the strength of its community - bringing together researchers from diverse disciplines and reinforcing the value of exchange, support, and shared experiences.
