Sustainability Research at IGSSE
Sustainability is an important part of every day life and also in research. For this reason, TUM organises the TUM Sustainability Day every two years to draw attention to projects and research that deal with this topic. At the IGSSE, we have many research projects that deal with the topic of sustainability. Some of the doctoral researchers have created short videos in which they talk about their research and how it contributes to sustainability. Check out videos of six of our doctoral researchers on their research and how they impact sustainability:
Yixuan Wang examines how different tree species respond to drought. This is because foresters need to know: Which tree species tolerate droughts? She analyses satellite images and compiles models that help foresters making their choice - for healthy and long-living forests despite climate change.
For Wei Chieh Huang, sustainability in transportation is not only about reducing car usage. It is also about how to make sure people can go where they want to go, regardless of where they live and who they are. In his research he unpacks how time constraints, for example those of single-parents, can affect their travel behaviour.
Peter Schneider researches novel materials that help improve energy efficiency. Fuel cells, electrolysers and batteries are at the top of his mind. He is fascinated by understanding the world we live in and by the opportunities this knowledge brings for making technology more sustainable.
Jan Marco Ruiz de Vargas shares how the technology of federated machine learning advances the renewable energy transition and data privacy all in one: "We can have the cake and eat it too".
Fabian Fehn tests new models of urban mobility. A taxi or a riksha that transports both packages and people - it's cheaper, greener and called "ride-parcel-pooling".
Agnieszka Gaska investigates the gut microbiome. These microorganisms in our digestive system are great helpers for our immune system. They digest our food, prevent pathogen infections, and stimulate our immune system.
